Fort Worth, Texas — Let’s be honest: the tequila shelves are getting incredibly crowded with endless “innovations” that often taste more like artificial vanilla syrup than actual agave. But every now and then, a crossover comes along that actually makes you sit up and pay attention.
Enter Fort Worth-based La Pulga Spirits. They’ve just announced a 90-proof, limited-edition Reposado Double Barrel that does something pretty bold—it crosses state lines and international borders, finishing its Jalisco-born spirit in empty Red Corn Bourbon barrels from Austin’s own Still Austin Whiskey Co.
On paper, it sounds like a wild gamble. You take 100% Blue Weber Agave grown in the Highlands of Jalisco, Mexico, let it age for seven months as a standard reposado, and then dump it into freshly harvested casks that previously held one of the most sought-after whiskeys in Texas.
The result? A tequila that doesn’t try to hide its raw agave punch, but instead wraps it in a layer of sweet red corn complexity, subtle spice, and a bit of Texas heat. It works. Mostly because it shouldn’t.

“This is one of those bottles that just makes you stop and say, ‘okay, this is something really special,'” says La Pulga Co-Founder Sarah Castillo, who launched the brand alongside two fellow Fort Worth entrepreneurs.
Having spent time living in Austin, Castillo has long admired Still Austin’s craft. For her, finishing their tequila in those prized bourbon barrels was a natural, almost poetic evolution.
It’s still unmistakably La Pulga, but with a deeper, slightly more complex character that connects the craft scenes of Austin and Fort Worth.
The bottle’s presentation is just as striking as the liquid inside. La Pulga has always used Mexican folk-art alebrijes (spirit animals) on their labels, but this expression features a vibrant red serpent. It’s a dual-purpose symbol: it represents transformation and creative energy, sure, but it’s also a direct nod to the red snake on Still Austin’s Bottled in Bond Red Corn Bourbon label.
Plus, for the first time, they’ve added a red keepsake medallion around the neck of the bottle, which will probably turn this into a quick collector’s item for Texas bar shelves.

If you aren’t familiar with the brand, La Pulga (which literally translates to “the flea market,” a nod to the vibrant, communal outdoor markets beloved across Mexico and the American Southwest) has been quietly building a reputation for highly-awarded spirits.
Their portfolio also includes a Mezcal and a Sotol. For this double-barrel experiment, they’re keeping things remarkably clean—using only three basic ingredients: agave, water, and pure craftsmanship. (Well, and time, of course.)
At a suggested retail price of $69.99, it sits comfortably in the premium category without being completely offensive to your wallet. You’ll find it landing at select retailers soon.
But if you want a taste of what happens when Jalisco clay meets Texas corn, you might want to start hunting down a bottle before the whiskey nerds and tequila purists clear the shelves. Once they’re gone, they’re gone.
